Easy Fingerless Mitts

Materials:

One skein of DK weight yarn, approximately 110 yards

Set of size 5 double pointed needles, or size needed to obtain correct gauge

Small stitch holder

Marker

Gauge:

5 st/inch in St Stitch

Instructions (make two identical):

Wrist:

Cast on 36 stitches.  Divide stitches evenly over three double pointed needles (12 stitches/needle), place a marker, and join in the round, being careful not to twist your work.

Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2.5 inches.

Change to stockinette stitch, and work for 2 to 2.5 inches.  You can try the mitts on as you make them to customize the fit to your hand.

Thumb opening:  Knit two stitches, then slip the next 9 stitches to a small stitch holder.

Using the backwards loop method, cast on nine stitches to the right needle.

Hand:

Continue in stockinette stitch for approximately 1.5 inches.

Change to K2, P2 ribbing and knit for a further 1 to1.5 inches.  Bind off in pattern.

Thumb:

Slip the nine stitches from the holder onto a double pointed needle.  With RS facing, use a second needle to pick up one stitch at the side of the thumb opening, then pick up 4 more stitches from the stitches you cast on using the backward loop method.  With a third needle, pick up the remaining 5 cast on stitches, plus one additional stitch at the other side of the thumb opening.  You should have 20 total stitches.

Knit one round, decreasing four stitches evenly across the round (16 stitches).

Switch to K2, P2 ribbing and work ribbing until thumb measures approximately 1.5 inches.  Bind off in pattern.

Weave in ends.
